Early detection of deep vein thrombosis in patients with coronavirus disease 2019: who to screen and who not to with Doppler ultrasound?

Abstract: Purpose Aim of the study is to evaluate the incidence of DVT in COVID-19 patients and its correlation with the severity of the disease and with clinical and laboratory findings. Methods 234 symptomatic patients with COVID-19, diagnosed according to the World Health Organization guidelines, were included in the study. “…Several studies report a lower incidence of VTE in COVID-19 patients hospitalized on a medical ward (ranging between 1.6 and 22.5%) as compared to intensive care unit (ICU)patients (25%-100%) [4,5]. Lerardi et al report a deep venous thrombosis (DVT) incidence of 1.6% among 60 non-ICU patients, routinely screened by doppler ultrasound [6].
