Early childhood sexual abuse increases suicidal intent

Abstract: Childhood sexual abuse has been consistently associated with suicidal behavior. We studied suicide attempt features in depressed individuals sexually abused as children. On average, sexual abuse started before age 9. It frequently coexisted with physical abuse. “…Results from crude analysis stratified by sex point out to a significant association, in which girls who have been physically and sexually abused present, respectively, 3.42 and 3.36 more probability of reporting suicidal ideation in the last month, and boys who have been exposed to physical abuse present 2.11 more probability of reporting the same outcome. These findings are somewhat consistent with what is found in the literature suggesting that physical 28,29 abuse is an important predictor of suicidal ideation among female and male, and that sexual abuse 35 is an important predictor of suicidal behavior among girls.…”

“…In the analyses, physical and sexual abuse were not independently analyzed, so this study is unable to suggest which form of abuse can be more important for suicidal ideation occurrence. There is evidence that only sexual, but not physical abuse, is associated with suicidal behavior 35 at the same time as there is evidence that both types of abuse can predict suicidal behavior 16,46 .…”

“…El primer análisis entre mayor frecuencia de EIA y las otras variables estudiadas, ratifica en Chile la evidencia respecto a que la depresión con historia de EIA se asocia a un inicio más temprano, mayor severidad al momento de consultar, mayor número de CP, mayor cronicidad y suicidalidad 8,28,[35][36][37][38] . A esto agregamos la relación de mayor frecuencia de EIA con EV y VP.…”

“…Several risk factors for psychotic experiences have also been independently demonstrated in cohorts with suicidal behavior (25)(26)(27)(28)(29). Notably, psychotic experiences are associated with the presence of multiple comorbid Axis I diagnoses (multimorbidity) (17,19), an established risk factor for suicidal behavior (25).…”
