Background: The amount and quality of saliva play important roles in maintaining an intraoral bacterial balance. The quality of saliva is defined by its buffering capacity, viscosity, pH and protein content. The amount of saliva is usually related to the flow rate. Purpose: This study aimed to compare the flow rate, pH, viscosity and buffering capacity of saliva as well as plaque formation in children before and after dental treatment. Methods: Saliva samples were taken from paediatric patients before their treatments and one month after their dental treatments had ended, and these saliva samples were then analysed. For each sample analysis, the GC Saliva-Check Buffer kit (GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) was used to evaluate buffering capacity, pH and flow rate, and the GC Saliva-Check Mutans kit (GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) was used for the determination of Streptococcus Mutans. GC Tri Plaque ID gel (GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) was applied to evaluate plaque maturation. Results: The pre-treatment buffering capacity, pH and viscosity sample values were found to be significantly lower than the post-treatment values (p<0.05). No statistically significant difference was determined in the amount of saliva pre- and post-treatment (p>0.05). When examining plaque maturation, it was determined that all of the post-treatment plaque was pink. Conclusion: This study showed that the pH, viscosity and buffering capacity of saliva had increased significantly post-treatment and that the formation of plaque had decreased in children with active caries after all their dental treatments had been completed.

71 aylık ve daha küçük çocuklarda en az iki adet kaviteli veya kavitesiz çürük, çürük nedeniyle kaybedilmiş diş ya da dolgulu diş yüzeyinin varlığı; erken çocukluk çağı çürüğü (ECC) olarak ifade edilmektedir. Çocuklarda; en fazla gözlenen kronik hastalıklardan biri ECC’ dir. Bu çürükler erken evrede teşhis edildiklerinde genellikle geri dönüşümlü enfeksiyonlar olup, önlenebilir özellik taşımaktadır. Etkin korunma stratejileri ile bu dönemde çocukların ağız sağlığı kalitelerinin geliştirilebilir olması kadar hastalığın mikrobiyal, dental ve fizyolojik yaklaşımlarının bilinmesi de gerekmektedir. ECC tedavi edilmediği takdirde ise ağrı, bakteriyemi, büyüme ve gelişim geriliği, erken süt dişi kaybı gibi komplikasyonların yanında sonuçların doğurduğu yüksek maliyetli tedavilere sebep olmaktadır. Ağız mikrobiyotası; 700 çeşitten fazla bakteri, mantar, virüs ve parazitlerin bir arada bulunduğu mikroorganizma topluluğu olup; diş fırçalama ve diyet alışkanlığına ek olarak yaşla birlikte çeşitlilik göstermektedir. Doğum anında steril kabul edilen ağız mikroflorası çocuğun annesi veya bakıcısı tarafından vertikal geçişle kontamine olması sonucu bu özelliğini kaybeder. Bu çalışmamızda değişen dinamiklere sahip olan oral mikrobiyotanın ECC ile olan ilişkisi ile ilgili güncel literatür verilerinin derlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Sonuç olarak ECC ile oral mikrobiyota ilişkisinin doğru yorumlanması erken dönemde çocuklarda gözlenen çürük lezyonlarının durdurulması ve biyomimetik şekilde tedavi edilmesi açısından büyük önem taşımaktadır.

Background: The aim of this cross-sectional study is to investigate the socio-demographic, clinical and behavioral factors affecting the oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) in preschool children with malocclusion. Methods: This study was carried out with 113 children (30-to-71 months) and their parents attending to the clinics of the Pediatric Dentistry Department at Istanbul University. Data were collected through clinical examinations and a questionnaire including the Turkish version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS), socio-demographic and behavioral characteristics. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney-U test, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and the multiple linear stepwise regression analysis. Results: In the bivariate analyses, significant positive correlations were found among the number of decayed and filled teeth, the scores for the total ECOHIS and its child and family sections. It was found that children with distal plane and deep bite malocclusion and those with non-nutritive sucking habit had better oral health-related quality of life than those without. In the regression analysis, having a habit related to malocclusion, presence of dental caries and increasing child age were determined as factors that decreased the child-related quality of life and explained 17.1% of the total variance. Conclusion: It was determined that periodontal status and malocclusion type did not adversely affect oral health-related quality of life in children. The number of dental caries and filled teeth, having parafunctional habits, child's age and attendance at educational institution were identified as important determinants affecting oral health-related quality of life of children.
