Early changes of abdominal adiposity detected with weekly dual bioelectrical impedance analysis during calorie restriction

Abstract: Objective: To elucidate early change of intra-abdominal fat in response to calorie restriction in patients with obesity by weekly evaluation using a dual bioelectrical impedance analysis (Dual BIA) instrument. Design and Methods: For 67 Japanese patients with obesity, diabetes, or metabolic syndrome, intraabdominal fat area (IAFA), initially with both Dual BIA and computed tomography (CT), and in subsequent weeks of calorie restriction, with Dual BIA were measured. Results: IAFA by Dual BIA (Dual BIA-IAFA) cor… Show more

“…Taking these findings into consideration, VFA estimation by BCM can therefore be powerful tool to identify patients with ectopic fat accumulation. There are numerous reports indicating the reliability of BCM estimation of VFA (5,17,22,23). However, one must take into account that the VFA value from BCM is based on completely different technology compared to the CT-based VFA measurement, which is the most accurate method.…”

“…BCM can only estimate the VFA by measuring impedance by two different pathways of current through abdominal fat (17,22). Ida et al reported that when comparing the time dependent change of VFA after weight reduction therapy by CT and BCM measurement, BCM measurement tend to show more significant change (23). This may be due to the difference between the principle method of CT and BCM.…”

“…For the assessment of weight reduction, we analyzed the change in weight (post-intervention BW -baseline BW) during the therapy [16]. We defined the patients who reduced their BW by more than 5% from their baseline BW as being successful at weight reduction for 6 months, as reported previously [17]. We measured baseline FT4 and TSH in the 97 obese patients who enrolled, in order to analyze the association of baseline FT4 and TSH with the change in weight during lifestyle intervention.…”

“…The surface impedance is measured by applying and measuring the voltage from the abdominal circumference electrodes. Other details of the study method were described previously (Ida, 2013). We performed computed tomography (CT) at the umbilical level and calculated the visceral fat area (VFA) using the image analysis software SINGO CT 2006A (Siemens, Somaton Emotion).…”

“…Due to the high rate of obesity in Mexico and the need for an accessible method of realizing epidemiological studies in order to fully evaluate the impact of different interventions and reduce CV risk associated with elevated abdominal adiposity, the present study validated the DUALSCAN, HDS-2000 OMRON machine. This instrument was used to measure IAFA using bioelectrical impedance analysis (Dual BIA) in the Mexican population, demonstrating its clinical practicality (Ida, 2013).…”
