Early and late complications of endoscopic hemostatic techniques following different carotid artery injury characteristics

Abstract: This study shows that the crushed muscle patch and aneurysm clip can be viable options in the management of ICA injury with short-term and long-term benefits. Complications associated with these techniques were comparable if not reduced when compared to the published literature.

“…The use of haemostatic agents have been described before with good results by several authors [22][23][24], in our centre, due to the demographics and economics of our population availability of different haemostatics is very limited, therefore routine use of this agents is not a common practice for our patients. When available we use BeriPlast®(a biosurgical fibrin sealant kit) or Floseal® (a gelatine matrix haemostatic sealant)…”

“…After data was recorded, "time to hemostasis" and "blood loss" outcomes for the AnastoClip were compared with other hemostats used in the previous study. 7 This was analyzed using the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by post hoc Wilcoxon rank sum tests with the Benjamini-Hochberg correction for multiple comparisons…”

“…5 The application of a crushed muscle patch has been found efficacious, though in the longer term, is associated with a low risk of pseudoaneurysm formation. 6,7 Direct vessel closure techniques such as the U-clip anastomotic device (Medtronic, Jacksonville, FL) and the T2 aneurysm clip (Mizuho, Tokyo, Japan) have also been effective in gaining hemostasis, without the risk of pseudoaneurysm. 6,7 The success of the clip, however, is dependent on precise placement.…”
