Early-acting inbreeding depression and reproductive success in the highbush blueberry, Vaccinium corymbosum L.

Abstract: Tetraploid Vaccinium corymbosum genotypes exhibit wide variability in seed set following self- and cross-pollinations. In this paper, a post-zygotic mechanism (seed abortion) under polygenic control is proposed as the basis for fertility differences in this species. A pollen chase experiment indicated that self-pollen tubes fertilize ovules, but are also 'outcompeted' by foreign male gametes in pollen mixtures. Matings among cultivars derived from a pedigree showed a linear decrease in seed number per fruit, a… Show more

“…High seed-set values could arise from crosses among unrelated individuals, with those among closely related individuals giving lower levels of seed-set. Such correlations between the degree of relatedness of individuals and the fertility of crosses have been demonstrated elsewhere by Krebs & Hancock (1990) and Seavey & Carter (1994).…”

“…Evidence of inhibition of cross-pollen by self-pollen has been also shown for Asclepia syriaca by Morse ( 1994) and for Asclepia exalta by Broyles and Wyatt (1995). In natural conditions low seed set is determined both by pollen efficiency (quantity and quality) and maternal resource availability (Broyles and Wyatt, 1995 Krebs and Hancock ( 1990) (Stephenson and Bertin, 1983;Schlichting and Devlin, 1989; Snow, 1990), pollen performance of a particular genotype depends on the recipient plant. These results could be interpreted as a variable level of compatibility between different genotypes attributed to the existence of a self-incompatibility system.…”

“…also be reduced. A reduction in pollen stainability as an estimate of male function has been reported following selfing (Ritland & Ganders, 1987;Krebs & Hancock, 1990;Willis, 1993b), but we are unaware of other published studies where pollen production was used to compare self and outcross progeny.…”

“…Dudash, 1990;Johnston, 1992), but the measurement of inbreeding depression has been biased toward quantifying female function, partly because of the ease of data collection. Some data on pollen viability have been reported for Medicago (Dziubenko, 1983), Mimulus guttatus (Ritland & Ganders, 1987;Willis, 1993b), and Vaccinium coymbosum (Krebs & Hancock, 1990), but we still lack information on the effects of selfing on pollen production. Examining components of male and female function such as the production of pollen and ovules allows us to quantify the effects of inbreeding depression on potential gamete production beyond the commonly used fitness parameters such as total flower number per individual or a measurement of overall size, which is often significantly correlated to flower number (e.g.…”
