We develop exceptional field theory for E 8p8q , defined on a (3+248)-dimensional generalized spacetime with extended coordinates in the adjoint representation of E 8p8q . The fields transform under E 8p8q generalized diffeomorphisms and are subject to covariant section constraints. The bosonic fields include an 'internal' dreibein and an E 8p8q -valued 'zweihundertachtundvierzigbein' (248-bein). Crucially, the theory also features gauge vectors for the E 8p8q E-bracket governing the generalized diffeomorphism algebra and covariantly constrained gauge vectors for a separate but constrained E 8p8q gauge symmetry. The complete bosonic theory, with a novel Chern-Simons term for the gauge vectors, is uniquely determined by gauge invariance under internal and external generalized diffeomorphisms. The theory consistently comprises components of the dual graviton encoded in the 248-bein. Upon picking particular solutions of the constraints the theory reduces to D " 11 or type IIB supergravity, for which the dual graviton becomes pure gauge. This resolves the dual graviton problem, as we discuss in detail.

Abstract:We revisit the SL(5) U-duality manifest action constructed by Berman and Perry in an extended spacetime. Upon choosing a four-dimensional solution to the section condition constraint, the theory reduces to a four-dimensional truncation of elevendimensional supergravity. In this paper, we show that the theory contains more than this M-theory reduction. The section condition also admits an SL(5) inequivalent threedimensional solution, upon which the action directly reduces to a three-dimensional truncation of type IIB supergravity. We also discuss the reduction to IIB * supergravity.

Extending previous work on generalised geometry, we explicitly construct an E 7(7) -valued vielbein in eleven dimensions that encompasses the would be scalar bosonic degrees of freedom after reduction to four dimensions of D = 11 supergravity, by identifying new "generalised vielbeine" in eleven dimensions associated with the dual 6-form potential and the dual graviton. By maintaining full on-shell equivalence with the original theory at every step our construction furnishes the non-linear ansatz for the dual (magnetic) 7-form flux for any non-trivial compactification of D = 11 supergravity, complementing the known non-linear ansätze for the metric and the 4-form flux. A preliminary analysis of the generalised vielbein postulate for the new vielbein components reveals tantalising hints of new structures beyond D = 11 supergravity and ordinary space-time covariancxe, and also points to the possible D = 11 origins of the embedding tensor. We discuss the extension of these results to E 8(8) .
