Dysregulation of gut health in zebrafish by differentially charged nanoplastic exposure: an integrated analysis of histopathology, immunology, and microbial informatics

Abstract: Differential charged nanoplastics (NPs; different surface functional groups) engendered by plastic aging widely existed in water environment, yet minimal was known about their bio-enrichment characteristics and toxicity effects. Here, the...

“…Importantly, Lianguo Chen et al (2018) found that the toxicity of titanium dioxide nanoparticles and bisphenol A exposure in zebrafish is associated with the gastrointestinal microbiome, with the combined exposure leading to oxidative stress closely related to the ratio of pathogenic Lawsonia and normal metabolic Hyphomicrobium ( Chen et al, 2018 ). Recent research findings indicate that the ingestion of differentially charged nanoplastics leads to the development of inflammatory lesions in the gut, disruption of electron transfer processes, inhibition of energy metabolism during mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, oxidative stress, increased expression of pro-inflammatory factors, and disturbances in pathways related to glycolipid metabolism ( Xu et al, 2023 ). Our findings highlight that zebrafish is the predominant model organism in environmental toxicity studies.…”

“…Additionally, the XPS spectra of Cu 2p in CuZn consist of two characteristic peaks and two satellite peaks. The spectra at 936.06 eV and 953.22 eV of the sample correspond to the characteristic peaks of Cu 0 [36]. Cu 0 in ZIF-8 can form a bimetallic synergistic effect with Zn 2+ and exhibits good redox properties.…”

“…This aspect is crucial for the enhanced electrochemical detection performance of CuZn in contrast to pure ZIF-8. In the high-resolution N 1s spectrum (Figure 6e), two peaks are evident: 398.95 eV for pyridine-N and 399.4 eV for pyrrole-N, indicating the synthesis of ZIF-8 [36].…”

“…18,21,23,27 NPs are created through aged plastic by processes like ultraviolet radiation and microbial degradation, resulting in variations in surface functional groups and surface charges. 28,29 However, there is a limited understanding of the effects of NPs on the transmission of ARGs. Among the few examples, Sheng et al found that exposure to NPs or co-exposure to antibiotics and NPs increased the diversity of ARGs in the soil invertebrate Enchytraeus crypticus.…”
