Dynamics of telopodes (telocyte prolongations) in cell culture depends on extracellular matrix protein

Abstract: Telocytes (TC) are cells with telopodes (Tp), very long prolongations (up to 100 lm) with an uneven caliber (www.telocytes.com). Factors determining the dynamics of cellular prolongations are still unknown, although previous studies showed telopode motility in TC cultures. We comparatively investigated, by time-lapse videomicroscopy, the dynamics of Tp of mouse heart TC seeded on collagen, fibronectin, and laminin. Under our experimental conditions, TC and fibroblasts (cell line L929) behaved differently in te… Show more

“…High levels of fibronectin determine the differentiation of cells and the loss of the self‐renewal markers Nanog and Oct4 . Furthermore, TCs were previously shown to adhere and spread better than fibroblasts in vitro . Taken together, these findings suggest that TCs synergistically act with stem cells to affect heart regeneration.…”

“…Smooth muscle proteins were identified in telocytes such as desmin, vimentin, α-SMA, smooth muscle myosin heavy chain, smoothelin, myosin light chain kinase, calponin, vinculin, and α-actinin. Telopode dynamics were studied in telocytes of the mouse heart [Suciuet al, 2010;Niculite et al, 2015]. Although the contractile elements and associated proteins were located in telocytes, they were not contractile, and their movement was restricted.…”

“…A growing number of studies have described telocytes in different mammalian tissues and organs . Concerning SGs, the only study published to date was performed on rat and human normal parotid glands and revealed that telocytes are present not only in periacinar areas similarly to exocrine pancreas, but also around ductal structures as also observed in bile ducts .…”
