Economic costs due to operational downtime and wave overtopping under the RCP 8.5 scenario are evaluated at 7 Chilean ports located on a tectonically active-coast. Wave statistics for a historical period (1985-2004), mid-century (2026-2045) and end-of-century projections (2081-2100) are computed with a Pacific-wide model, forced by wind fields from six General Circulation Models. Offshore waves are then downscaled to each port, where downtime is computed by comparing wave heights with vessel berthing criteria. The difference in downtime between the historical and projected periods is attributed to climate change. While changes in offshore wave climate will be moderate and spatially smooth in the region, some ports will reduce and others increase downtime for mid-century projections due to local effects. By the end-of-century, however, all ports will experience downtime reduction. Additionally, by mid-century, overtopping will increase in northern ports as a combination of extreme waves and sea-level rise (SLR), while in southern ports it will be slightly reduced due to milder waves. By the end-of century, overtopping will increase in the whole region, mainly driven by SLR. Overtopping rates, however, are significantly altered by coseismic uplift/subsidence which may occur during the design-life of coastal works. Adaptation measures are finally proposed.

Fenders are structures installed on the edges of ships to protect the ship's hull from impact with the dock. The main function of fenders is to absorb the collision energy generated by the ship's impact during berthing at a dock. The load applied to fenders on each ship results in stress distribution in the surrounding hull area, which can lead to various issues such as damage, cracks, deformations, and others. Additionally, the presence of fenders with different shapes can affect the stress distribution values in the surrounding hull area. Hence, a local stress analysis using finite element method software is necessary. The analysis focuses on static loads originating from the ship itself when docked at a port. However, only the fender section is analyzed, and it is not necessary to consider the entire ship's body. The objective of the analysis is to determine the stress characteristics and maximum stress values in the fender itself. The analysis results reveal that the highest stress value occurs in the half-pipe-shaped fender with a value of 0.22809 MPa. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the stress values in the fender meet the allowable standards. In conclusion, this analysis provides an understanding of stress and the maximum stress value in ship fenders. This knowledge is crucial to ensure that fenders effectively fulfill their function of protecting the ship from impacts with docks.

This research is to develop a methodology to optimize the performance of fenders using finite element analysis. The design of fender geometry is done using software SolidWorks. Simulation is one of several add-in tools in SolidWorks. The finite element analysis of the performance of the fender designed is then evaluated by simulation tool in SolidWorks. This study also shows the potential applications of computer aided engineering and its benefits in verifying and reinventing various fenders design.
