Dynamics of Pulsed Recording of Holographic Diffraction Gratings in Photopolymer Materials

Optical data storage has had a major impact on daily life since its introduction to the market in 1982. Compact discs (CDs), digital versatile discs (DVDs), and Blu-ray discs (BDs) are universal data-storage formats with the advantage that the reading and writing of the digital data does not require contact and is therefore wear-free. These formats allow convenient and fast data access, high transfer rates, and electricity-free data storage with low overall archiving costs. The driving force for development in this area is the constant need for increased data-storage capacity and transfer rate. The use of holographic principles for optical data storage is an elegant way to increase the storage capacity and the transfer rate, because by this technique the data can be stored in the volume of the storage material and, moreover, it can be optically processed in parallel. This Review describes the fundamental requirements for holographic data-storage materials and compares the general concepts for the materials used. An overview of the performance of current read-write devices shows how far holographic data storage has already been developed.

The configuration of a two-beam interferometer with fixed inclined mirrors for recording holographic gratings is described. The convergence angle of the partial beams is adjusted in the range from 0 to 180 • by changing the angle of incidence of the primary beam on the entry edge of the beam-splitting cube without additional adjustment of the mirrors. The path lengths of the interfering beams are automatically aligned by the mirror symmetry of the system. The optimal kinematics of adjusting the convergence angle is found that allows working with beams of sufficiently large diameter in the whole range of adjustment. The interferometer is highly resistive to vibration due to lack of adjustment devices.

Die optische Datenspeicherung hat seit Ihrer Markteinführung 1982 das tägliche Leben geprägt. Compact Disk (CD), Digital Versatile Disk (DVD) und Blu‐ray Disk (BD) sind universelle Datenträgerformate mit den Vorteilen des kontaktfreien und damit abnutzungslosen Lesens und Schreibens der digitalen Daten. Sie ermöglichen einen schnellen Datenzugriff, hohe Transferraten und eine stromfreie Datenspeicherung bei sehr günstigen gesamten Archivierungskosten. Der stete Wunsch nach der Erhöhung der Datenspeicherkapazitäten und ‐transferraten treibt die Entwicklung an. Für optische Datenspeicher ist die Nutzung holographischer Prinzipien ein eleganter Weg, diese Parameter weiter zu erhöhen, da hier im Inneren (also im Volumen) des Speichermaterials Daten abgelegt werden und zudem optisch parallel verarbeitet werden können. Dieser Aufsatz beschreibt die grundlegenden Materialanforderungen für holographische Speicher und vergleicht generelle Materialkonzepte. Ein Überblick über aktuelle Demonstrationen von Lese‐Schreib‐Geräten zeigt auf, wie weit die holographische Datenspeicherung schon entwickelt wurde.
