Dynamics of fatty acid regulatory genes during ovarian development in Penaeus monodon

Abstract: The delay in ovarian maturation in farmed black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon has resulted in the widespread practice of feeding broodstock with the polychaete Perinereis nuntia and their unilateral eyestalk ablation. Although this practice alters fatty acid content in shrimp ovaries and hepatopancreas, its effects on fatty acid regulatory genes are yet to be systematically examined. Here, microarray analysis was performed on hepatopancreas and ovary cDNA collected from P. monodon at different ovarian maturatio… Show more

“…These genes are part of the fatty acid beta-oxidation pathway, which metabolizes fatty acids for ATP production (Houten & Wanders 2010). Our data correspond with results from other studies that fatty acid beta-oxidation is up-regulated in ovaries during ovarian development due to increased energy requirements (Paczkowski et al 2013, Dunning et al 2014, Deenarn et al 2018.…”

“…Shrimp were fed with B2 commercial feed pellets (Charoen Pokphand Food Public Company, Ltd., Bangkok, Thailand) and maintained in seawater at 30 ppt and 27°C. Ammonium, nitrite and nitrate levels, alkalinity and pH were monitored and adjusted twice a week as previously described (Deenarn et al 2018).…”

“…Given polychaete's richness in PUFAs, it is not surprising to find several genes involved in fatty acid regulatory networks differentially specifically induced in the polychaete-fed group, especially after the eyestalk ablation. Previously, genes in the fatty acid regulation pathways have been shown to be highly expressed in mature ovaries of P. monodon fed with polychaetes after eyestalk ablation 38 . Fatty acids and dietary lipids are important for vitellogenesis as yolk proteins are composed mainly of lipoglycoproteins 39 .…”
