We investigated the distribution of nano-sized unicellular Cyanobacteria (nanocyanobacteria) in the Pacific Ocean. Nanocyanobacteria were distributed in the mixed layer throughout the western and central regions of the North and South Pacific subtropical gyres, where nitrate depletion and high irradiance are maintained throughout the year. Their maximum occurrence of >5 × 10 9 cells m -2 was found between 12 and 27°N and 10 and 21°S. These areas with high nanocyanobacterial abundance largely correspond with those with high nitrogen fixation activity. In particular, the biomass of nanocyanobacteria was comparable with or larger than Synechococcus between 10 and 20°N, while in the other regions, Synechococcus was overwhelmingly dominant. Where phosphorus was exhausted at the surface, they were comparatively sparse, even within the western subtropical gyres. In the subtropical and tropical provinces other than the western subtropical gyres, nanocyanobacteria were very sparse, even under similar nutrient conditions where nitrate was depleted and phosphorus was detectable. They may be competing with pico-sized Synechococcus and large filamentous diazotrophic Cyanobacteria Trichodesmium for various resources. Additionally, gaseous nitrogen fixation provides the nitrogenlimiting ocean surface with reduced nitrogen, which is available to nondiazotrophs after regeneration by zooplankton or released in the form of dissolved organic compounds (Capone et al. 1994). Traditionally, oceanic nitrogen fixation was considered to be carried out mainly by the filamentous Cyanobacteria of the genus Trichodesmium in the oligotrophic subtropical and tropical waters (Capone et al. 1997). However, after recent observations, nano-sized unicellular Cyanobacteria (nanocyanobacteria) are gaining increasing attention from biogeochemists as important marine nitrogen fixers (Montoya et al. 2004). Influence of the Changjiang River on the light absorption properties of phytoplankton from the East China Sea

Abstract. Phytoplankton light absorption properties were investigated at the surface and subsurface chlorophyll a maximum (SCM) layer in the East China Sea (ECS), a marginal sea which is strongly influenced by the Changjiang discharge in summer. Results from ECS were compared with those from the Tsushima Strait (TS) where the influence of Changjiang discharge is less. The probable controlling factors, packaging effect (cell size) and pigment composition of total chlorophyll a (Tchl a)-specific absorption coefficient (a * ph (λ)) were examined by the corresponding measurements of pigments identified by high-performance liquid chromatography. We observed distinct phytoplankton size structure and thereby absorption properties between ECS and TS. At the surface, mixed populations of micro-, nanoand pico-phytoplankton were recorded in ECS while picophytoplankton dominated in TS, generating a lower average a * ph (λ) in ECS than in TS. Within SCM, average a * ph (λ) was higher in ECS than in TS because of the dominance of nano-and micro-phytoplankton in ECS and TS, respectively. By pooling surface and SCM samples, we found regular trends in phytoplankton size-fraction versus Tchl a; and correlations between a * ph (λ) and Tchl a consistent with previous observations for the global ocean in TS but not in ECS. In ECS phytoplankton size-fraction was not correlated with Tchl a, which consequently caused poor relationships between a * ph (λ) and Tchl a. The abnormal values mainly originated from the surface low-salinity waters and SCM waters beneath them. At high Tchl a, a * ph (λ) of these samples was substantially higher compared to the values in TS and from the global regressions, which was attributable to the lower micro-phytoplankton fraction, and higher nano-and/or pico-phytoplankton fractions in ECS. These observations indicated that the distinct light absorption properties of phytoplankton in ECS were possibly influenced by the Changjiang discharge. Our findings imply that general bio-optical algorithms proposed based on the correlations between a * ph (λ) and Tchl a or the patterns in size-fraction versus Tchl a are not applicable in ECS, and need to be carefully considered when using these general algorithms in river-influenced regions.

In aquatic ecosystems, estimation of bacterial abundance (BA) is intimately connected to the development of an understanding of the role of bacteria in microbial food webs. Flow cytometry (FC) can rapidly calculate BA, but to date mostly has been applied in marine waters with limited use in shallow eutrophic lakes because of the abundant organic and inorganic matter. To seek the best compromise between precision and the clarity for the differentiation of bacteria from other submicron-sized particles and colloids in eutrophic lakes, we optimized FC instrument settings, fixatives and storage conditions, ultrasonic pre-treatment and staining protocols. Then, BA in Lake Taihu was investigated by the optimized FC procedures. Regression analysis showed good correspondence (R 2 D 0.72, p < 0.001, n D 128) of BA counted by FC and epifluorescence microscopy. The developed protocol was successfully applied to monitor the dynamics of BA in the large shallow eutrophic Lake Taihu. A distinct spatio-temporal shift of BA in Lake Taihu was observed. The shift was found to be mainly related to dissolved organic carbon, total suspended solids, water temperature and chlorophyll-a. Our results highlight the effect of sediment re-suspension and algal biomass on BA in eutrophic shallow lakes.
