Dynamics between energy consumption and economic growth in Ecuador: A granger causality analysis

Abstract: Energy consumption (EC) in Ecuador has increased significantly during the last decades, affecting negatively the financial position of the country since (1) large EC subsidies are provided in its internal market and (2) Ecuador is mostly a crude-oil exporter and oil-derivatives importer country. This research seeks to state the long-run price and income elasticities of energy demand in Ecuador, by analyzing information spanning the period 1970-2015. A co-integration analysis and an estimation by using a Dynami… Show more

“…(2018) made a complete review of the Ecuadorian electric sector between 2007 and 2017 and discussed the different energy policies and their impact on the economy of the country, and (ii) Pinzón (2018) studied the dynamics between energy consumption and economic growth [47], where Ecuador seeks to achieve sustainable development by analyzing energy consumption and economic growth based on demand and dependence on petroleum products and their subsidies.…”

“…James B. Ang [30] and Soytas [31] inaugurated the combined dynamic analysis between economic growth, energy consumption, as well as environmental pollution. These variables used to be indexed as to real GDP [32,33,34], GDP per capita [27], GDP of different industries [35,36], foreign direct investment, real fixed capital formation, total employment or labor force [36,37,38].…”

“…In essence, most empirical research that is available on energy consumption and economic growth could be organized into a category named ‘reduced-form analysis’, in which the endogenous variables are described as a function of exogenous variables, usually without the structure or primitive policy invariant behavioral parameters [39,40]. Among the large number of researches, the cointegration test, the Johansen test for multivariate analysis, and the error correction model are frequently used [8,20,35,41,42].…”

“…The paper now explores the statistical causal relationship between the variables using the Granger causality test [21]. Because the alteration of lag length is known to be sensitive to analysis of the results, different lag periods are selected in this study.…”
