Dynamics and Distribution of the Invasive Mosquito Aedes koreicus in a Temperate European City

Abstract: Aedes koreicus is a mosquito species native to Asia that has recently successfully invaded new areas in several European countries. Here, we provide important data on Ae. koreicus establishment in Pécs (Southern Hungary). Mosquito surveillance was carried out weekly between 2016 and 2019 at 10 different sites located throughout the city from May to September. We conducted a statistical analysis to evaluate the most important abiotic factors driving Ae. koreicus abundance. We then calibrated a previously develo… Show more

“…Since this Ae . koreicus population seems to have been established in a short period but is restricted to the city of Pécs [ 23 ], the economic center of the Southern Transdanubia region, the high observed haplotype diversity could correlate to the busy international transport of goods through the city. The other Hungarian population at Budapest was represented with a limited sample size in our analyses, but unambiguously conected to the Italian node.…”

“…At the same time, Ae . koreicus was found in Baranya county, southwest Hungary [ 22 ], where an overwintering but localized population has established [ 23 ], but a few years later (2019), it appeared in the capital city of Budapest, north-central Hungary [ 24 ]. Recently, Ae .…”

“…The way of introduction could not be identified with certainty, as no link could be made with an international trade route (Versteirt et al, 2012). Besides Belgium, introduction and/or establishment of this species in Europe has been described from Germany (Pfitzner et al, 2018;Steinbrink et al, 2019;Werner et al, 2016), Hungary (Kurucz et al, 2016(Kurucz et al, , 2020, Italy (Ballardini et al, 2019;Gradoni et al, 2021;Marcantonio et al, 2016;Suter et al, 2015), Slovenia (Kalan et al, 2017), Switzerland (Cherix, 2019), Russia (Bezzhonova et al, 2014) and Ukraine (Kovalenko and Tikhonov, 2019) in accordance with the ECDC vector map (ECDC, 2021). Whereas for most Aedes IMS several pathways of introduction have been identified with certainty, no pathways have been confirmed for Ae.…”

“…japonicus , which generally exhibits a considerable active and passive dispersal rate in Europe, although stationary populations have been observed [ 24 , 25 ], European populations of Ae. koreicus have mainly remained quite stationary and restricted to the area of initial establishment [ 44 , 45 ]. Thus, the observed negligible spread of the German population fits well with studies on other European Ae.…”
