Dynamical processes in a multi-motor gear drive of heavy slabbing mill

Abstract: A real case study is represented of abrupt failures in a new multi-motor gear drive of vertical rolls in the heavy slabbing mill. Modal analysis is conducted, and the lowest torsional vibration modes are verified by the data from an industrial plant. Conditions of parametric resonances due to variable stiffness of teeth are determined within the range of working speed. The branched gear drive is investigated by the non-linear dynamical model with backlashes. It is shown that instantaneous dynamic loads in driv… Show more

“…They are driven by separate electric motors (5 and 6) through toothed belts transmissions (7 and 8). Using elastic tooth belts allows for avoiding the undesired dynamical effects related to the angular clearances and out-of-phase torsional vibrations, which occur in the multi-motor drive systems with the usual spur gear couplings [38].…”

“…As a result, the modern production environment is an entity with large amounts of data. The drilling process is characterized by high dynamics with shocks and vibrations (axial bit bounce, torsional stickslip chatter and lateral whirling), which is typical in other industries for the long shafts with small stiffness [19], [20]. The overall performance of drilling process is very sensitive to the condition of drill bits [21]- [24], tubes couplings [25] and geological properties (hardness, compaction etc.)…”

“…Belt conveyors contain numerous rotational elements such as bearings, shafts and gearboxes, which need to be examined to assure effective and safe work. Drives of long belt conveyors are usually designed as the multi-motor systems, which are characterised by a complicated dynamic behaviour [5]. Using only the electric current for loads analysis is limited to only electric motors [6], while another elements of these machines are crucial and should be investigated both for daily needs and long-term periods.…”
