Dynamical Controls of the Eastward Transport of Overwintering Calanus finmarchicus From the Lofoten Basin to the Continental Slope

Abstract: Diapausing populations of Calanus finmarchicus at depth in the Lofoten Basin (LB) return to the continental shelf and slope off the Lofoten‐Vesterålen Islands during the phytoplankton spring bloom to feed and spawn, forming surface swarms with a great abundance. To study how overwintering populations of C. finmarchicus move with the deep currents and return to the shelf, Lagrangian transport characteristics of particles in deep water between 2008 and 2019 were analyzed using Global Ocean Reanalysis and Simula… Show more

“…Energetics analysis has been commonly used to reveal regional dynamic mechanisms. The Lorenz energy cycle (Lorenz, 1955) is an effective approach to investigating the variability of a current system and quantitatively describing energy transfer among reservoirs, providing insights into the underlying ocean dynamics (e.g., Dong et al., 2022; Ivchenko et al., 1997; Kang & Curchitser, 2015; Rieck et al., 2015; von Storch et al., 2012). It has been extensively employed in analyzing energetics in the Southern Ocean (e.g., Chen et al., 2014, 2016; G. Fu et al., 2023; Youngs et al., 2017).…”

“…Energetics analysis has been commonly used to reveal regional dynamic mechanisms. It's an effective approach to investigating the variability of a current system [e.g., Lorenz, 1955;Ivchenko et al, 1997;von Storch et al, 2012;Chen et al, 2014;Rieck et al, 2015;Kang et al, 2016;Dong and Zhou, 2022]. In this study, we employ the energetics analysis framework developed by Kang and Curchitser [2015] to explore the possible mechanism of an anomalous EKE event within the study area.…”
