Dynamic Viscosity of Tetracyanoborate- and Tricyanomethanide-Based Ionic Liquids by Dynamic Light Scattering

Abstract: Low-viscosity ionic liquids (ILs) based on the anions [B(CN)4]− (tetracyanoborate) and [C(CN)3]− (tricyanomethanide) are currently discussed as alternative working fluids for various applications. The dynamic viscosity of such ILs carrying [1-alkyl-MIM]+ (1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium) cations was investigated via determination of the translational particle diffusion coefficient by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The long-term stability of suspensions of different particles in the ILs, their particle diameters… Show more

“…For the characterization of particle size and its distribution as well as the dispersion stability of the nanofluids in the same fluid state as it is investigated in connection with the effective thermal conductivity, the diffusion coefficients were obtained by dynamic light scattering (DLS). For details on the principles of the technique [52] and its application for the determination of several thermophysical properties of various types of fluids [53][54][55][56] and dispersed systems [57][58][59], the reader is referred to the respective literature. In the following, only the information relevant for the present investigations is given.…”

“…À or [TCM] À ) are low-viscous ILs, 55 which have been currently successfully evaluated concerning their potential use in gas separation processes. 2,49,50 Some thermophysical properties for imidazolium [TCM] À -based ILs have been recently reported in the literature.…”

“…2,49,50 Some thermophysical properties for imidazolium [TCM] À -based ILs have been recently reported in the literature. 56, 57 Neves et al 58 performed for the first time a consistent and comprehensive structure-property study for a set of imidazolium-based ILs with cyano-functionalized anions, where the effect of the anion on the studied properties was investigated. However, the effect of the chemical nature of those ILs and their impact on the structural segregation of ILs is not clear.…”

“…This is consistent with our results for the binary mixtures of 4 ] and CO 2 could be deduced from the solubility and permeability data reported by Mahurin et al 6 This value, for which no details on the corresponding gas mole fraction are given, is shown in Figure 3 and agrees well with our measured and calculated data. 41 ). To quantify the influence of the dynamic viscosity of the three specific ILs on the mutual and self-diffusivities in their mixtures with small mole fractions of dissolved CO 2 , a correlation between the properties is shown in Figure 4 in the form of a double-logarithmic plot.…”
