Dynamic traffic assignment: model classifications and recent advances in travel choice principles

Abstract: Dynamic Traffic Assignment (DTA) has been studied for more than four decades and numerous reviews of this research area have been conducted. This review focuses on the travel choice principle and the classification of DTA models, and is supplementary to the existing reviews. The implications of the travel choice principle for the existence and uniqueness of DTA solutions are discussed, and the interrelation between the travel choice principle and the traffic flow component is explained using the nonlinear comp… Show more

“…Although various mathematical formulations of DUE have been proposed (see, Szeto and Wong, 2011), they are considerably complex ways to analyze properties of an equilibrium because they must handle the complicated nested structure between link and path travel times in a network. Consequently, many issues remain regarding DUE properties, such as their existence, uniqueness, and stability (Iryo, 2013).…”

“…Moreover, drivers can link their licence plate number and payment account to the ETCP service to enjoy the automatic payment service for parking. This new trend brings many challenges to the adaptability of classic traffic models, which are typically developed based on theoretical derivation and survey data, such as Vickrey's bottleneck model, dynamic traffic assignment techniques and regression approaches [1][2][3][4].…”

“…Besides considering multiple vehicles, some researchers studied other aspects of transportation, such as the route or mode choices [15,16], the uncertain traffic demand [17], the effects of different departure time [18], and the simultaneous departure time/route choices [19,20]. Reference [21] reviewed the model classification and travel choices adopted in DTA in recent years.…”
