Dynamic thermal rating for increasing network capacity and delaying network reinforcements

Abstract: Currently the operators of electrical distribution networks face a number of challenges, such as load growth, the proliferation of distributed generation and ageing infrastructure. This is drawing attention to techniques which will allow more efficient asset utilisation and carefully selected reinforcement projects. This paper presents the findings of research into the technical challenges and potential benefits of dynamic thermal rating (DTR) systems. The adoption of DTR systems has the potential to improve n… Show more

“…As far as the authors are aware there has only been one industrial application of DAR in distribution systems carried out in the U.K. in the past five years [22]- [25]. The field trial of each asset is on a section of 33-kV Scottish power energy networks considering connection of an offshore wind farm (each asset was analyzed separately).…”

“…It is possible to determine the current dynamic rating of a designated facility using ambient temperature and the function of equipment rating vs. temperature function. The wind speed and direction have substantial effect on the transmission capacity [6], e.g. increase of 1 m/sec at 90°angle may result in about 20% increase of conductor rating.…”

“…This also includes cases without any reinforcements [10][11][12][13][14]. Probabilistic network analysis is used to identify the risk of feeder failures based on acceptable maximum power interruptions in a year due to cable repairs and in order to develop a cable replacement policy [14].…”

“…Probabilistic network analysis is used to identify the risk of feeder failures based on acceptable maximum power interruptions in a year due to cable repairs and in order to develop a cable replacement policy [14]. Another study utilises the cable failure risk based on the contribution of a cable failure probability and the expected energy loss of the failure [13]. However, in most cases analyses do not consider the plant properties but rather only the fixed cable properties.…”
