Owing to children's developing reading skills and world knowledge, readability (comprehensibility as well as speakability) can be regarded as an important requirement of children's literature. This article focusses on one determinant of readability, the frequency of nonflnite constructions in children's books both originally written in Finnish and translated from English into Finnish. A high frequency of complex nonfinite constructions is likely to have a negative effect on readability, and consequently they might be expected to occur relatively infrequently both in original and in translated children's literature. A quantitative study of a large number of children's books shows that Finnish originals have indeed tended to favour finiteness, whereas translations show a higher degree of nonfiniteness. The translations thus fail to conform to one of the syntactic norms of the receiving literature. The article discusses potential reasons for this syntactic difference, considers the possibility of the existence of different sets of norms for translated and originally Finnish children's books, and speculates upon the innovatory influence of translations. Résumé: En relation avec le développement des facultés de lecture et des connaissances du monde chez l'enfant, la lisibilité s'impose comme un critère majeur de la littérature pour enfants. Le présent article examine un aspect linguistique de la lisibilité: la fréquence des constructions non finies dans des textes originaux finnois, et dans des textes traduits de l'anglais en finnois. La fréquence élevée de ces constructions étant un obstacle à la lisibilité, on peut s'attendre à leur faible présence dans des textes pour enfants, originaux ou traduits. Une étude quantitative d'un grand nombre de livres finnois pour enfants montre en effet une préférence pour les constructions finies, à l'opposé toutefois des traductions, qui n'adoptent pas cette norme syntaxique de la littérature d'arrivée. L'article essaie d'expliquer la différence, envisage l'hypothèse d'une double série de normes, et d'une influence novatrice émanant des traductions.

Στην παρούσα εργασία πραγματοποιείται συγκριτική μελέτη του βιβλίου The Book Thief και της μετάφρασής του στα ελληνικά και στα γαλλικά. Μέχρι πολύ πρόσφατα τραγικά γεγονότα, όπως είναι το Ολοκαύτωμα προσεγγίζονταν με μεγάλη αμηχανία στην παιδική και εφηβική λογοτεχνία, ενώ οι εκδοτικοί οίκοι αντιμετώπιζαν το δίλημμα της υποχρέωσης της παρουσίασης της ιστορικής αλήθειας από τη μία και της προσπάθειας να μην τραυματίσουν τους ανήλικους αναγνώστες από την άλλη. Στόχος της εργασίας είναι η διερεύνηση τυχόν διαφοροποιήσεων και προσαρμογών του έργου κατά τη μεταφορά του από τα αγγλικά στα ελληνικά και στα γαλλικά μέσα από τη συγκριτική μελέτη, η διερεύνηση μεταφραστικών στρατηγικών που υιοθετούνται κατά τη διαδικασία της μετάφρασης, εστιάζοντας στη μεταφορά του τραύματος από ένα πολιτισμικό σύστημα σε ένα άλλο και συνάγοντας συμπεράσματα για τον τρόπο με τον οποίο το τραύμα προσεγγίζεται στην εκάστοτε εθνική λογοτεχνία για ανηλίκους.

In children's literature, power relations are fundamentally assymetrical. This is furthermore accentuated in the process of translation where translation norms, social and cultural norms as well as the power game of adult authorities play a major part. The Swedish author Astrid Lindgren's ideology is based on the notion that no aspects of life should be hidden from the child, making her thematize as well as break taboos in her writing for children. There has been extensive research on Lindgren's authorship per se, but research on translations of her books seems to be limited. The fact that discussions on taboo elements in children's books in general, and Lindgren's source texts and target texts in particular are sparse indicates that this is a vast-and interesting-fi eld still to be explored. This paper focuses on the American and British translations of Lindgren's Madicken (1960) and Madicken och Junibackens Pims (1976) in order to fi nd out why and to what extent these books were censored in translation.
