Dynamic Spectrum Access for Internet of Things Service in Cognitive Radio-Enabled LPWANs

Abstract: In this paper, we focus on a dynamic spectrum access strategy for Internet of Things (IoT) applications in two types of radio systems: cellular networks and cognitive radio-enabled low power wide area networks (CR-LPWANs). The spectrum channel contention between the licensed cellular networks and the unlicensed CR-LPWANs, which work with them, only takes place within the cellular radio spectrum range. Our aim is to maximize the spectrum capacity for the unlicensed users while ensuring that it never interferes … Show more

“…However, they did not mention whether SS was used in their design or not. Moon et al in Reference adopted a centralized sensing mechanism based on SS deployed in a spectrum broker server. He emphasized that CR‐LPWAN systems can be distinguished from typical LPWAN systems according to whether SS techniques are used or not.…”

“…They suggested that their new LPWAN platform offers a cost‐effective and highly deployable mechanism, which is based on LoRaWAN technology. In a similar effort, Moon proposed a dynamic spectrum access strategy for CR‐LPWAN toward maximizing the spectrum capacity of CR‐LPWAN systems. He showed via numerical analysis that CR‐LPWAN systems may achieve better blocking probability than existing LPWAN technologies.…”

“…Moon introduced dynamic spectrum sensing for CR enabled low-power wide area networks and discussed the blocking probability of the licensed users, the mean dwell time of the unlicensed user, and the total carried traffic and service quality of licensed and unlicensed users. 7 Kim et al explored conditional interference distribution issue in CR devices for measuring interference at sensors. 8 probability of SU and also analyzed end-to-end transmission reliability for flooding scheme considering outage constraint for both PUs and SUs.…”
