Dynamic simulation of air storage-based gas turbine plants

Abstract: SUMMARY Cavern storage is a proven energy storage technology, capable of storing energy in the form of compressed air inside a cavern. The Huntorf plant and the Alabama plants use this technology to store electrical energy during the off‐peak load hours by compressing the air inside a cavern and then using this compressed air during gas turbine operation to generate electricity during peak load demand hours. The advantage of doing this is that it increases the efficiency of gas turbine operation while meeting … Show more

“…the Huntorf CAES plant in Germany exhausts the high temperature flue gas from a two-stage turbine to environment without any heat recovery, resulting in a numerous wasteful heat [3]. Up to now, some works related to utilizing the waste heat from turbine exhaust to improve the conventional CAES performance have been investigated.…”

“…The study also integrates a bulk energy storage technology, namely, compressed air energy storage (CAES) [11], into the system and assesses the benefits it offers in terms of cycling and production costs reductions. The methodology developed is devised to incorporate the realistic cycling costs reported by various studies in the open literature within all generator's (coal, oil, natural gas (NG) combined cycle, and CT) start-up (SU) and shut-down (SD) costs and also AS offers.…”
