Dynamic Shear Deformation and Failure of Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-1Cr-1Fe Alloys

Abstract: To study the dynamic shear deformation and failure properties of Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-64) alloy and Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-1Cr-1Fe (Ti-55511) alloy, a series of forced shear tests on flat hat shaped (FHS) specimens for the two investigated materials was performed using a split Hopkinson pressure bar setup. The evolution of shear deformation was monitored by an ultra-high-speed camera (Kirana-05M). Localized shear band is induced in the two investigated materials under forced shear tests. Our results indicate that severe strai… Show more

“…It should be noted that although the cracks extend into the shear band to some extent ( Figure 4 d), almost all cracks occurred at the shear band/matrix interface. Similar phenomena have been observed in Ti-55511 alloy [ 16 , 28 , 29 ].…”

“…Combined with our previous work [ 16 , 29 ] and the microstructures shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5 , the sequence of the microstructural evolution within an ASB for Ti-55511 alloy can be summarized, and Figure 7 is the schematic representation. As shown in Figure 7 a, an ASB forms due to the occurrence of severe strain concentration in the shear region, and the grains or phases near the ASB are rotated and elongated along the shear direction (shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5 ).…”

“…However, this shear width value is higher than that of the design (W s = 0.2 mm). In most of the shear specimens, such as the hat-shaped and flat-hat-shaped, the plastic zone is considerably higher than expected, which leads to overestimation of the value of the reported strain calculated by Meyers methods [24]. Figure 15 shows the contour of the equivalent stress on the NSSS surface.…”

“…This finding indicates that pure shear loading occurs for the NSSS during the test. Ran et al [24] found that in the flat hat-shaped sample the shear strain distribution was not equal. As shown in Figure 14, a line is drawn in the center of the NSSS to study the shear strain in the shear zone and calculate the width of the shear zone in the NSSS.…”

“…α + β titanium alloys have attracted great interest in a variety of industries and fields owing to the high specific strength, reasonable ductility, and ability to withstand corrosion resistance [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. With widespread engineering applications, the mechanical behavior of the alloys under high strain-rate loading has been essentially required not only in ballistic impact conditions, but also in normal manufacture processes [ 4 , 5 , 6 ] and the accompanied failure behavior [ 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”
