Dynamic responses of composite structures coupled through fluid medium

Abstract: Dynamic analysis was conducted for two flexible composite structures coupled by a fluid medium. As the dynamic loading is applied to one structure, the other structure responds to the dynamic loading resulting from the load transfer through the fluid medium. To investigate such a coupled interaction between two structures, both experimental and numerical studies were conducted to supplement each other. First, a series of experiments were undertaken for two separate composite plates. In the designed test setup,… Show more

“…This suggests that the largest peak impact force does not necessarily produce the largest strain because the loading rate and loading history are also important factors for the response of the structure. A previous study (Kwon and Bowling 2018) gave some explanation on this. Even though a load magnitude is smaller, a faster loading rate may result in a greater deformation leading to a larger strain.…”

“…The same experimental set-up was utilized in the study as used in Kwon and Bowling (2018). Figure 1a shows the overall test set-up including three composite plates without the top cover.…”

“…Then, the techniques were coupled through the interface conditions between the two media. For structural analysis, the finite element method has been the most popular technique (Kwon and Bang 2000;Kwon 2016). Recently, the cellular automata technique was applied to structural problems (Kwon and Hosoglu 2008;Kwon 2017;Kwon and Bowling 2018).…”
