Dynamic rating of forced cooled transmission cables

Abstract

The 345 kV cables are predominantly forced cooled.Forced cooling is achieved through the installation of cooling plants. The main components of a cooling plant are the pumps, air-to-fluid heat exchangers, refrigeration equipment, and hydraulic system. Various stages of the cooling system provide different levels of transmission of Forced Cooled Transmission Cables then used to compute ratings.The model is composed of more than 1,600 sirnultaneous partial differential equations that are solved every 5 minutes by the central processing unit (CPU), which also refreshes the ratings at this rate. The CPU, located at the Sprain Brook Substation, obtains cable loading locally
