Dynamic optical coherence tomography measurements of elastic wave propagation in tissue-mimicking phantoms and mouse corneain vivo

Abstract: Abstract. We demonstrate the use of phase-stabilized swept-source optical coherence tomography to assess the propagation of low-amplitude (micron-level) waves induced by a focused air-pulse system in tissue-mimicking phantoms, a contact lens, a silicone eye model, and the mouse cornea in vivo. The results show that the wave velocity can be quantified from the analysis of wave propagation, thereby enabling the estimation of the sample elasticity using the model of surface wave propagation for the tissue-mimicki… Show more

“…1. Further details about the PhS-SSOCT system can be found in our previous work [39,40]. Briefly, the PhS-SSOCT system utilized a broadband swept laser source (HSL2000, Santec, Inc., Torrance, California) with central wavelength of 1310 nm, bandwidth of ~130 µm, scan rate of 30 kHz, and output power of ~39 mW.…”

“…Point dynamic loading is attractive as a source of shear waves, and an attractive noncontact localized method is the micro-air puff developed and applied extensively by the Larin group [45, 57, 63, 81, [97][98][99][100][101][102][103][104][105][106][107][108][109][110][111][112][113][114][115][116], mainly to the cornea, but also to skin [108,116], cardiac and skeletal muscles [104], cartilage [101,106], fat and soft tissue tumors [97], and kidneys [112]. Similar to ARF-based excitation, an air puff can deliver a localized and well-controlled impulse stimulus, which can be accompanied by measurement of the tissue displacement or measurement of the air puff-induced elastic wave.…”

“…This device is an adaptation to the noncontact tonometer (NCT) to measure the viscoelastic properties of the eye [6]. Lastly, another method uses a focused airpulse system and a phase-stabilized swept-source optical coherence tomography to assess the propagation of low-amplitude (micron-level) waves [7].…”
