Dynamic Norms Promote Sustainable Behavior, Even if It Is Counternormative

Abstract: It is well known that people conform to normative information about other people's current attitudes and behaviors. Do they also conform to dynamic norms-information about how other people's behavior is changing over time? We investigated this question in three online and two field experiments. Experiments 1 through 4 examined high levels of meat consumption, a normative and salient behavior that is decreasing in the United States. Dynamic norms motivated change despite prevailing static norms, increasing inte… Show more

“…Another way to leverage the impact of norms falls under the general category of 'nudges' 56,57 , which influence behaviour through modification of choice architecture (i.e., the contexts in which people make decisions). Because people are highly reactive to the choices made by others, especially trusted others, an understanding of social norms that are seen as new or emerging can have a positive impact on behavior 58 . For instance, a message with compelling social norms might say, 'the overwhelming majority of people in your community believe that everyone should stay home' .…”

“…Researchers have also encouraged adoption of the Mediterranean diet for its health benefits (Leblanc et al 2015) since this diet has been shown to have a lower carbon footprint than typical western diets (van Dooren et al 2014). Other studies have found that participants who received statements of dynamic norms (namely that a growing fraction of the population have begun to eat less meat) were more likely to purchase meatless lunches than participants in a static norm or a control group (Sparkman and Walton 2017).…”
