Dynamic multibenefit solutions for global water challenges

Abstract: Increasing water scarcity and extreme weather due to climate change have implications for securing water for food, drinking, and the environment. These 21st century global water challenges are often co‐located, yet the solutions to these issues are often decoupled. To efficiently address global water challenges, implementing dynamic multibenefit solutions is needed to respond rapidly and nimbly to diverse and multiple water needs simultaneously. In this article, we provide an example of how dynamic multibenefi… Show more

“…Because Multiple‐Benefit Conservation starts with defining goals aimed at achieving multiple benefits simultaneously, there will naturally be challenges inherent in increasing project complexity (Rohde et al, 2019). For anyone who has worked on a conservation project, the challenges are familiar, but we believe employing a Multiple‐Benefit Conservation frame can more clearly define these challenges and improve opportunities to address them.…”

“…For example, the bond measure language of Proposition 84, which established $1 billion to implement regional water management plans, states that eligible plans shall “use an integrated, multi‐benefit approach to project selection and design,” and “projects that may be funded … must provide multiple benefits” (Proposition 84, Public Resources Code § 75026(a)). Finally, the term is beginning to find its way into conservation journals (e.g., Golet, Anderson, Luster, & Werner, 2009; Rohde, Reynolds, & Howard, 2019).…”

“…Tenders can have an important role in targeting ecological values on private land and rightly rewarding landholders for managing and conserving those values on their properties. They could also play a particularly important role in conserving temporary features that might be important for parts of the year (D’Aloia et al, 2019; Rohde et al, 2020). However, their role and efficiency in conserving natural values beyond the term of the agreement are still unclear.…”

“…Global challenges are often localized and associated with anthropic pressure (Rohde et al, 2020) such as energy stress (e.g., oil production crisis), environmental problems (e.g., deforestation, lack of water and population growth) and climate change, which catastrophically threaten the world order (Homer-Dixon, 2006).…”
