Dynamic modelling of nitrous oxide emissions from three Swedish sludge liquor treatment systems

Abstract: Abstract:The objective of this paper is to model the dynamics and validate the results of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions from three Swedish full-scale nitrifying/denitrifying, nitritation and anammox systems treating anaerobic digester sludge liquor. The Activated Sludge Model No. 1 is extended in order to describe N 2 O production by both heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria. In addition, mass transfer equations are implemented to characterize the dynamics of N 2 O in the water and the gas phases. The bioc… Show more

“…It is important to highlight that the N 2 O models used in the study are still under development and are in the process of being validated with full-scale data. Results thus far have been promising (Lindblom et al, 2016). In this paper, the N 2 O production by AOB is based on denitrification with NH 4 + as the electron donor.…”

“…A multiscale modelling approach is implemented where the biomass growth in carriers (i.e., Kaldnes K1 type) are modeled as one dimensional (also used in other studies (Eberl et al, 2006;Lindblom et al, 2016). The reactor is assumed as a completely stirrered tank reactor (CSTR), and diffusion governs the transport of soluble compounds, whereas the particulates are transported by advective transport.…”

“…The IFAS system is modelled using a multiscale approach where the carrier geometry was assumed to be a flat sheet. The biofilm growth was simplified to one dimensional, a commonly used approach in other studies (Eberl et al, 2006;Lindblom et al, 2016;Vangsgaard et al, 2013). A relatively low DO (0.1 mg/L) compared to CAS system was maintained to suppress the nitrite oxidizing bacteria growth (Cao et al, 2017;Malovanyy et al, 2015).…”
