Dynamic Light Control Using Bionic Dielectric Elastomer Iris Actuators

Abstract: Apertures are used in optical systems to limit the luminous flux. In the human eye the iris serves this purpose but can be damaged requiring an implant, which to date is static, limiting the optical performance. The authors thus report the development of a prototype demonstrating the feasibility of a flexible dynamic iris implant manufactured with an automated manufacturing technique. The presented actuators are printed via aerosol jet printing allowing a high reliability in produced electrode quality. Through… Show more

“…Scalability is also difficult and tends to restrict use to small dimensioned applications. Here, however, the very thin design can be of benefit, particularly in medical applications such as bionic dielectric elastomer iris actuators [48]. In addition, bioinspired soft robotics have also been developed with DEAs [49,50].…”

“…Because cuttlefish contract around 80% of the dilated pupil area in daytime ( 21 ), the artificial W-shaped pupil has 20% of the opening area, enabling high-contrast imaging by balancing vertically uneven lights. A promising solution for 3D-adjustable pupils may be the use of light-actuated elastomers ( 13 , 36 38 ). Another approach may be to use a photochromic dye that changes light transmittance depending on external light intensity ( 39 ).…”

“…Among these, DE is regarded as one of the most promising actuation materials to combine with perception. DEs show large strains, fracture toughness, and power-to-weight ratios, which have been widely researched in the fields of flexible wearable devices, artificial muscles, and bionic robots , and have many substantial applications such as soft lens, fast moving fish, crawling robot, and flapping-wing robot. , DEs exhibit the capability to integrate with sensing in terms of both characteristics and application circumstances.…”
