Dynamic Involvement of Telocytes in Modulating Multiple Signaling Pathways in Cardiac Cytoarchitecture

Abstract: Cardiac interstitium is a complex and dynamic environment, vital for normal cardiac structure and function. Telocytes are active cellular players in regulating main events that feature myocardial homeostasis and orchestrating its involvement in heart pathology. Despite the great amount of data suggesting (microscopically, proteomically, genetically, etc.) the implications of telocytes in the different physiological and reparatory/regenerative processes of the heart, understanding their involvement in realizing… Show more

“…TCs had a particular infrastructural phenotype and expressed abilities to establish homo‐ and heterocellular contacts, and performed three‐dimensional stromal networks inside of tissues/organs such as in lung tissue and thyroid follicles 6 . Cell–cell communication mediated by TCs with various cell types was dependent on crucial modulators of intercellular signaling 45–47 . TCs could interact with stem cells, epithelial cells, fibroblasts, immune cells, neural cells, smooth muscle cells, and endothelial cell types by establishing cell membrane contacts 48 .…”

“…On the other hand, in the heart, TCs regulation of the WNT signaling pathway (and concomitantly other pathways) conducts cardiomyocyte differentiation and maturation, helping the integration of young cardiac muscle cells into adult heart architecture [ 72 ]. However, the impairment of maturation of Wnt proteins is followed by the decrease of stem cell activity, subsequently undermining digestive epithelial renewal [ 70 ].…”
