Mining exploitation of hard coal is conducted in the Silesian region in Poland. As a result, the post-mining void is formed which leads to non-uniform lowering of the ground level. Consequently, thousands of buildings are vertically deflected. This type of deflection causes troublesome use of buildings, underestimates their value, and in extreme situations leads to exceeded limit states. Therefore, such buildings are rectified by non-uniform elevations by means of jacks. On the basis of the analysed rectification processes, the method of determining the deflection of a building and the height of elevating its corners were presented depending on the type of building. This paper is a review of methods of determining the deflection of buildings having different sizes: single-storey buildings, single-storey buildings with a usable attic, two-storey buildings, and 11-storey buildings. Moreover, specific situations were analysed, in which the elevation height was determined by a range of additional works performed during rectification. This review was used to develop guidelines for determining deflection values and specifying the height of non-uniform elevation of corners.

The differential settlement of short subgrade between two highway structures (bridges, tunnels, culverts, etc.) is significantly greater than that of the other subgrade for the insufficient compaction of short subgrade owing to limited construction site. This paper aims to establish the control criteria to prevent bump at bridge approach for differential settlement of short subgrade with oblique prestressed concrete overlying asphalt layer (AC + OPC) composite pavement. In this work, the short subgrade and AC + OPC composite pavement were defined. Meanwhile, the driving comfort was analysed and the control criteria for differential settlement of short subgrade with different lengths were obtained based on the driving comfort using the driving comfort test. Finally, the effects of different layer parameters on stress and deflection were investigated and the control criteria for differential settlement of short subgrade were established based on the void area beneath the slab using the finite element software ANSYS. Results show that the length of short subgrade between two highway structures is defined to be less than 200 m. The vehicle speed and longitudinal slope have significant effects on the vertical acceleration. The asphalt layer modulus, OPC layer thickness and modulus, base layer thickness and modulus, and foundation modulus have effects on the flexural stress and deflection, especially the OPC layer thickness. The relationship between the additional stress and void area beneath the slab is derived. In addition, the control criteria for differential settlement of short subgrade with different lengths are put forward based on the void area beneath the slab and driving comfort. The application of AC + OPC composite pavement can prevent bump at bridge approach of short subgrade effectively. The results of this paper can provide guidance for the application of AC + OPC composite pavement.

Prestress applied on bridges affects the dynamic interaction between bridges and vehicles traveling over them. In this paper, the prestressed bridge is modeled as a beam subjected to eccentric prestress force at the two ends, and a half-vehicle model with four degrees-of-freedom is used to represent the vehicle passing the bridge. A new bridge–vehicle interaction model considering the effect of prestress with eccentricity is developed through the principle of virtual work. The correctness and accuracy of the model are validated with literature results. Based on the developed model, numerical simulations have been conducted using Newmark's β method to study the effects of vehicle speed, eccentricity and amplitude of the prestress, and presence of multiple vehicles. It is shown that prestress has an important effect on the maximum vertical acceleration of vehicles, which may provide a good index for detecting the change of prestress. It is also interesting to find that the later-entering vehicle on the prestressed bridge will largely reduce the maximum vertical acceleration of the vehicle ahead of it.
