Dynamic impacts of energy use, agricultural land expansion, and deforestation on CO2 emissions in Malaysia

Abstract: This study empirically investigates the nexus among energy use, agricultural land expansion, deforestation, and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions in Malaysia. Time series data from 1990 to 2019 were utilized using the bounds testing (ARDL) approach followed by the Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) method. The DOLS estimate findings show that the energy usage coefficient is positive and significant with CO 2 emissions, indicating a 1% increase in energy consumpti… Show more

“…Some specialists speculated at the outset of the pandemic that SARS-CoV-2 could be spread from humans in China to pangolins (WHO, 2021). The rising global population has resulted in a higher demand for meat and other foods (Raihan et al, 2021;Raihan et al, 2022a;Raihan and Said, 2022;Raihan, 2023b). The great bulk of the meat that is consumed by humans comes from livestock raised in intensive farming operations.…”

“…The industry can even lead to biodiversity decline if it does not operate sustainably (Macchi et al , 2020). Besides, when deforestation occurs, increasing carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions also becomes an obvious consequential issue (Phiri et al , 2021; Raihan et al , 2022) Morton et al , (2006) empirically stated that deforestation resulting from agricultural land expansions is one of the primary reasons for rising pollutant emissions. If such circumstances occur, alternative agricultural practices are highly advised to adopt for preserving the nature.…”

“…Accordingly, it has become pertinent for the world economies to integrate the environmental protection objectives within their respective economic growth policies; consequently, environment‐friendly economic growth can be accomplished. However, energy use is believed to be a major threat to the attainment of environmental sustainability; particularly due to the emissions of greenhouse gases that are generated from combusting unclean energy resources (Raihan et al, 2022). Thus, within the recent environmental economics‐related narrative, it is recommended to abate the energy use‐related emissions so that the pathways leading towards achieving the SDG objectives can be smoothened (Murshed et al, 2021).…”
