Dynamic Hardening of AISI 304 Steel at a Wide Range of Strain Rates and Its Application to Shot Peening Simulation

Abstract: The hardening behavior of AISI 304 steel is investigated at various strain rates, from the quasi-static state to ultra-high strain rates, because it is necessary for numerical simulation of high-speed deformation problems. This kind of testing at a wide range of strain rates has not been yet reported in the literature although it is indispensable for accurate numerical analyses where deformation takes place with a wide spectrum of strain rates. AISI 304 steel is a kind of austenitic stainless steel used in var… Show more

“…However, the temperature or the strain rate will affect the mechanical properties of Inconel 718 [27,38], which could show different results in the investigations on the trend of equivalent backstress under different shot speeds and coverage rates. However, this effect manifests itself when the strain rate varies by several orders of magnitude [39]. In this study, the speed varies from 10 m s −1 to 70 m s −1 , without a significant change in order of magnitude.…”

“…The shot peening process is a kind of cold processing technology. The high-speed mediums impact the workpieces, forming a plastic deformation layer and leaving pits on the surface [3][4][5]. Mechanical rolling can significantly improve the mechanical properties of specimens, such as the surface hardness, residual compressive stress, and strength and toughness while producing compressive residual stress in the external surface [6].…”
