SUMMARYThe inverse elastostatic method deals with a class of problems in which a deformed configuration of an elastic body is known while the initial stress-free configuration or the stress in the deformed state is to be determined. The method is imperative for certain problems in engineering applications. Computational methods of inverse elastostatics have been established for elastic continua. In this paper, we present an inverse method for thin-wall structures modeled as geometrically exact stress resultant shells. The theoretical basis and the details of implementation are discussed. Numerical examples involving both isotopic and anisotropic materials are presented. The practical utility of the method is demonstrated using an example of human aneurysm stress analysis.

A one-dimensional finite element model of a sandwich panel with insert is derived using the approach used in the Thomsen model. The one-dimensional model produces results that are close to those of a two-dimensional axisysmmetric model. Both models assume that the core is homogeneous. Our results indicate that the one-dimensional model may be well suited for small deformations of sandwich specimens with foam cores.

Problems related with the modeling and dynamic response to blast loadings of doubly-curved sandwich panels with laminated face sheets are developed. In this respect, the implications of the panel curvature, of anisotropy and stacking sequence of face sheets, of transverse orthotropy of the core, and of structural damping on dynamic response to timedependent loads are highlighted. As concerns the blast pulses considered in this analysis, these are related to in-air explosions or of traveling shock-waves. Other parameters, mainly geometrical, are also considered in the numerical simulations, and their implications on the dynamic response are put into evidence. Due to the absence of similar results in the specialized literature, this paper is likely to fill a gap in the state of the art of this problem, and provide pertinent results that are instrumental in the design of advanced sandwich shells operating in a dynamic environment. Moreover, the closed-form solutions developed in the paper, can serve as excellent references for comparison with numerical based solutions.
