Dynamic electron correlations with charge order wavelength along all directions in the copper oxide plane

Abstract: In strongly correlated systems the strength of Coulomb interactions between electrons, relative to their kinetic energy, plays a central role in determining their emergent quantum mechanical phases. We perform resonant x-ray scattering on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ, a prototypical cuprate superconductor, to probe electronic correlations within the CuO2 plane. We discover a dynamic quasi-circular pattern in the x-y scattering plane with a radius that matches the wave vector magnitude of the well-known static charge order.… Show more

“…Because its width is comparable to its energy, it is appropriate to say that this acoustic plasmon is highly damped. Further, RIXS measurements of Bi-2212 at larger momenta, q ∼ 0.4 r.l.u., observe broad isotropic charge fluctuations that are consistent with the continuum observed with M-EELS [22]. Together, optics, RIXS, and M-EELS give a consistent picture that BSCCO exhibits a highly damped plasmon for small momenta, q < 0.12 r.l.u., and an MFLlike continuum everywhere else in momentum space.…”

“…From this, we conclude that the data is consistent with a CDW with an in-plane propagation vector of ( δ , 0) as observed in other cuprates. A high-energy (500 < E < 900 meV) inelastic ring-like feature in ( H , K ) was observed in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+ δ , which was interpreted as evidence for dynamical charge fluctuations 35 . We find no evidence for a feature like this in our ζ scans (see Supplementary Note 3 and Supplementary Fig.…”

“…However, the interplay between correlation effects at short distances and Coulomb repulsion at long distances may well result in an incommensurate CDW with nontrivial doping dependence (see for instance refs. 67 69 ). In any event, it is important to realise that we are not opposing a locally commensurate modulation that has discommensurations and a “genuinely” incommensurate wave that has a perfectly sinusoidal modulation.…”
