Dynamic Deformation Behavior of Soft Material Using SHPB Technique and Pulse Shaper

Abstract: This paper presents a modified Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) technique to obtain compressive stress strain data for NBR rubber materials. An experimental technique with a modified the conventional SHPB has been developed for measuring the compressive stress strain responses of materials with low mechanical impedance and low compressive strengths, such as the rubber and the polymeric material. This paper uses an aluminum pressure bar to achieve a closer impedance match between the pressure bar and the spe… Show more

“…Figure 3 shows the original voltage signals of the incident wave, reflected wave, and transmitted wave recorded in SHPB tests. As shown in the figure, before the sample is destroyed, the obvious plateau line appears in the reflected wave curve, which indicates that the constant strain rate loading is realized by using the pulse shaper technique [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ]. On the other hand, for the uniformity of stress/strain distribution, besides the stress equilibrium during loading, whether the local stress concentration may still lead to the strain uniformity is not well satisfied [ 22 ].…”

“…Aluminium alloy bar seems to be effective for testing polymer materials, thanks to the match of wave impedance and its lower strain-rate sensitivity. For meeting the conditions of constant strain rate and dynamic stress equilibrium, it is necessary to accurately design the shape of incident pulse [15]. A pulse-shaping technique is applied to meet these requirements, which, in general, places a wafer at the end of incident bar.…”

“…It acquires the material properties of the specimen by using elastic waves with different impedance between the pressure bar (composed of the incident bar, reflected bar, and transmitted bar) and the specimen. Previous studies conducted acquisition of material properties using specimen of various materials such as concrete [ 7 ], composite [ 8 ], rubber [ 9 , 10 ] and metal [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”
