Dynamic Damage Constitutive Model of Frozen Silty Soil with Prefabricated Crack under Uniaxial Load

To investigate the coupling damage characteristics of rock after high-temperature treatment under impact load, dynamic uniaxial compression tests for deep sandstone specimen under laboratory conditions varying with high temperature (i.e., 25°C, 100°C, 300°C, 500°C, 700°C, and 900°C) and strain rate (i.e., 170 s-1, 205 s-1, and 240 s-1) were performed using splitting Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system. Coupling damage variable of deep sandstone was deduced based on the Lemaitre equivalent strain theory. Moreover, the damage parameters of deep sandstone were systematically determined according to the test data, and the effects of high temperature and strain rate on damage growth curves were investigated. Finally, a dynamic compound damage constitutive model, which could consider the coupling damage, was established and verified to describe the dynamic mechanical characteristic of deep sandstone. Theoretical and experimental results indicated that the simulated stress-strain curves matched the test data well and the proposed coupling damage constitutive model could reflect the high temperature-induced weakening and strain rate strengthening effect.

Frozen soils are widely distributed in the seismically active regions of northwest China. Under the background of global warming, the study of the dynamic characteristics of frozen soil is very significant for the sustainable development of engineering in cold regions. In this study, the silty clay in the Lanzhou area of northwest China is selected to investigate the dynamic characteristics and its influence factors by dynamic triaxial tests. Various influence factors were considered, including confining pressure, soil temperature, soil water content and loading frequency. The dynamic elastic modulus ratio and reference dynamic strain amplitude increase as confining pressure and soil temperature decrease, and they also increase as soil water content and loading frequency increase. With an increase in confining pressure, soil water content, loading frequency, and a decrease in soil temperature, the damping ratio decreases but the maximum dynamic elastic modulus increases. With an increase in dynamic strain amplitude, the dynamic elastic modulus ratio has a decreasing trend, while the damping ratio has an increasing trend. It was found that the dynamic behaviors are most sensitive to the soil temperature. In addition, the comprehensive influence effect of soil water content, confining pressure, soil temperature, and loading frequency on the maximum dynamic elastic modulus, maximum damping ratio, and reference dynamic strain amplitude of frozen silty clay are analyzed, and the quantitative relationships between them are established. The results can provide evidence for seismic design and safe operation and maintenance of infrastructure in cold regions.

The paper presents a review of crucial experiments and the latest publications, presenting the previous and current trends in experimental research in 2018–2021 in the area of soil dynamic interaction based on the Hopkinson bar technique. A review of investigated experimental test stands was made, in particular, cohesive and non-cohesive soil specimens prepared with different dimensions and densities. From this study, it can be concluded that the dynamic response of the soil depends on many factors, e.g., density, cohesion, moisture and grain structure of the soil specimen. There is still a noticeable interest in SHPB experiments performed in both 1D and 3D versions under modified conditions (frozen/heated soil specimen, different degree of water saturation content of the soil sample) in a wide range of strain rates 102–104 s−1, which is a large field for further research. The need to learn about the characteristics of various types of soil (both cohesive and non-cohesive) for the selection of structural design solutions for the protection elements of critical infrastructure was emphasized.
