Dynamic coordination of the perirhinal cortical neurons supports coherent representations between task epochs

Abstract: Cortical neurons show distinct firing patterns across multiple task epochs characterized by different computations. Recent studies suggest that such distinct patterns underlie dynamic population code achieving computational flexibility, whereas neurons in some cortical areas often show coherent firing patterns across epochs. To understand how coherent single-neuron code contributes to dynamic population code, we analyzed neural responses in the rat perirhinal cortex (PRC) during cue and reward epochs of a two-… Show more

“…The surgical procedures were almost identical to those reported in previous studies ( Ohnuki et al, 2020 ; Osako et al, 2021 ; Takamiya et al, 2021 ). Rats were anesthetized with 2.5% isoflurane before surgery, which was maintained throughout the surgical procedure.…”

“…Neurons coding a behavioral response were previously reported in the PER and POR when animals were required to produce an associated behavior based on a stimulus ( Furtak et al, 2012 ; Ahn and Lee, 2015 ; Bos et al, 2017 ; Ohnuki et al, 2020 ). Those response-related firings were present even when the associated stimuli were from different sensory modalities ( Ohnuki et al, 2020 ).…”

Those response-related firings were present even when the associated stimuli were from different sensory modalities ( Ohnuki et al, 2020 ). Our previous study showed that the emergence of response coding was not confined to a time point at which animals were actually moving their muscles to produce a certain choice response ( Ahn and Lee, 2015 ).…”
