Dynamic Characteristics of a Segmented Supercritical Driveline with Flexible Couplings and Dry Friction Dampers

Abstract: Helicopter tail rotors adopt a segmented driveline connected by flexible couplings, and dry friction dampers to suppress resonance. Modeling for this system can provide a basic foundation for parameter analysis. In this work, the lateral-torsional vibration equation of the shaft with continuous internal damping is established. The static and dynamic effects caused by flexible diaphragm couplings subject to parallel and angular misalignment is derived. A novel dual rub-impact model between the shaft and dry fri… Show more

“…Further, the applications of the thermodynamically consistent dynamic equilibrium Equation (35) can be extended to study the friction pendulum dampers used in structural isolations [49][50][51] and other friction dampers used as an energy dissipation devices for structures against an earthquake load [52][53][54]. The dynamic equilibrium equation can also be used for investigating frictional dissipation in vibration energy harvesters [55], independent energy dissipation mechanisms in impact-pendulum [56] and in rub-impact events [57], and influence of wear-dust on contacting surfaces or on the dissipation characteristics etc.…”

“…In particular, dry friction damping technology is an effective means of reducing the vibration load in gas turbine engines [3,4], paddle disks [5,6], and cardan drives of helicopter tail rotors [7]. Friction effects in the so-called Coulomb damper are widely used in material mixing equipment and automatic washing machines [8].…”

“…Te device proposed in article [35] is composed of rigid parts with articulated joints, an elastic element that allows the recovery of its shape, and an element that dissipates energy by friction. Dry friction damping technology is an efective means of cardan drives of helicopter tail rotors [36]. Friction efects in the so-called Coulomb damper are widely used in material mixing equipment and automatic washing machines [37].…”
