Dynamic Carrier-Sense Threshold Selection for Improving Spatial Reuse in Dense Wireless LANs

Abstract: As density of a wireless LAN grows, per-user throughput degrades severely, deteriorating user experience. To improve service quality, it is important to increase system spectral efficiency. Controlling carrier-sense threshold is one of the key techniques to achieve the goal, because frequently transmissions are unnecessarily blocked by carrier sensing, even though these transmissions can take place without causing packet losses. Using high carrier-sense threshold and allowing nodes to transmit aggressively may… Show more

“…Once one of the nodes transmits a packet, it triggers other nodes in the group to transmit their packets together. So et al [5] proposed a method where two CSTs are used instead of one. When a node transmits a packet, it includes an "advertised CST" in the preamble, which should be obeyed by the neighbors to protect the ongoing transmission.…”

“…In the simulations, CST min is −82 dBm and CST max is −62 dBm. The third method is "Dual-CST", which is a method proposed in [5] and uses "advertised CST" in addition to the original CST. The fourth method is "PSR", where an AP advertises acceptable interference in the preamble, and a node in a different BSS may choose to transmit if its interference will not exceed the acceptable interference level at the AP.…”

“…The simulator is our in-house implementation, in which the wireless networks operate following the IEEE 802.11 standard. Note that our simulator has been efficiently applied in several previous works [11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. Moreover, we have published the simulator's source codes on the website in [23].…”

“…In recent years, emphasis has been placed on spreading wireless communications on the largest scale in various indoor environments [1]. Nevertheless, the increase in wireless communication devices, which are characterized by low cost and higher data rate services, has resulted in the provision of large quantities of operations for deploying wireless local area networks (WLANs) across a wide variety of domains [2]. Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) is known as one of the best most important and widely used technologies and techniques, which has been applied in a wide variety of types for indoor environmental areas [3].…”
