Dynamic Brazilian Test of Brittle Materials Using the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar and Digital Image Correlation

Abstract: In this paper, the dynamic tensile properties of brittle materials were studied by using the dynamic Brazilian tests. Combined with a high‐speed photographic system, a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) was used to conduct dynamic Brazilian tests on three brittle materials: Al2O3 ceramic, granite and poly(methyl methacrylate). Based on the images recorded by a high‐speed camera, the displacement and strain fields were obtained by the digital image correlation method. The dynamic deformation and failure of the… Show more

“…The failure pattern of the specimen is a key character of the mechanical behaviours of concrete materials, which is usually represented by collecting the fragments of the broken specimen . With the improvement of experimental technology, the high‐speed camera digital measuring is widely used to capture the failure process of the specimen in the SHPB experiment . Based on the failure characteristics of the specimen, three typical failure patterns are visible at different strain rates, as shown in Table .…”

“…55 With the improvement of experimental technology, the high-speed camera digital measuring is widely used to capture the failure process of the specimen in the SHPB experiment. 43 Based on the failure characteristics of the specimen, three typical failure patterns are visible at different strain rates, as shown in Table 2. It shows that the strain rate can obviously affect the failure pattern of the specimen.…”

“…Brittle materials such as rock and concrete are strain‐rate sensitive, and different loading rates result in a change in mechanical properties and fracture behaviours . Experiments under different impact velocities were carried out in this paper.…”

“…The high-rate digital image correlation (DIC) is a further development of the above described techniques [12,13]. In this case, information about specimen deformation is given by motion analysis of a large number of points (speckle) spreading over the surface of the specimen gauge length [14,15].…”
