Dynamic analysis of a cracked bar by the method of characteristics

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new numerical approach for studying a cantilever bar having a transverse crack. The crack is modeled by an elastic longitudinal spring with a stiffness K according to Castiglione’s theorem. Design/methodology/approach The bar is excited by different longitudinal impulse forces. The considered problem based on the differential equation of motion is solved by the method of characteristics (MOC) after splitting the second-order motion equation into two first-o… Show more

“…Atha and Jahanshahi (2018) also proposed DL-based approach for corrosion detection in steel structural members. Nevertheless, most of the vibration-based approaches are confined to damage detection and localization phases (Salehi and Azami, 2019; Ayas and Chabaat, 2019; Paral et al , 2019). Also, majority of the vibration-based investigations are confined to simulated damages on steel structures.…”

“…Natural frequencies are obtained by solving the differential equation of motion. Recently, Ayas et al (2019) analyzed a cantilever bar having a transverse crack under longitudinal vibration. The crack is modeled by an elastic translational spring.…”
