Dyke demolition led to a sharp decline in waterbird diversity due to habitat quality reduction: A case study of Dongting Lake, China

Abstract: Dongting Lake, an important wintering habitat for migratory waterbirds in the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, has suffered serious degradation in recent decades. To restore habitats for biodiversity conservation and flood control, 459 dykes were demolished and 14 were preserved in 2017. However, the direct impact of dyke demolition on wintering waterbirds was not comprehensively assessed. In this study, based on annual waterbird census and habitat data (2013/14–2020/21), we compared the differences in habitat … Show more

“…DEM plays an important role in bird habitat prediction [48]. Flat terrains allow shorter flight distances and lower energy expenditure in the search for food [47]. In the present study, areas with high Anatidae richness were concentrated between 0 and 200 m in altitude.…”

“…Plant coverage is an important indicator for predicting herbivore habitat distribution [46] and is also significantly correlated with the richness of Anatidae [47]. However, this relationship is not straightforward due to the complex dietary preferences of Anatidae [48].…”

“…Changes in bird species and numbers are important indicators of the health of bird communities and their habitats. Identification of bird species and quantification of their abundance in a target region is one of the key tasks in bird field surveys [ 1 ]. However, currently, bird field monitoring is mainly conducted manually, and there are obvious limitations in this type of data collection process.…”

“…Water birds are an important component of natural wetland systems, and they play a key role in sustaining wetland biodiversity. Water bird conservation has become one of the important elements of biodiversity conservation in wetland ecosystems worldwide [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Disseminating bird knowledge to the public and promoting public participation are critical to bird conservation, especially rare and endangered birds.…”
