Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Using Natural Dyes Extracted from Roselle (<i>Hibiscus Sabdariffa</i>) Flowers and Pawpaw (<i>Carica Papaya</i>) Leaves as Sensitizers

Abstract: Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were fabricated using natural dyes extracted from roselle flowers and carica papaya leaves extract as photosensitizers. The photovoltaic perfomance of the DSSCs were evaluated under 100 mAcm -2 light intensity. The roselle (Hibiscus Sabdariffa) extract sensitized solar cell gave a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 0.180 mAcm -2 , an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.470 V, a fill factor (FF) of 0.552, and an overall solar energy conversion efficiency (η) of 0.046%. Also, t… Show more

“…According to Danladi et al [12], using natural dyes extracted from roselle flowers and Carica papaya leaves in DSSCs resulted in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 0.046% and 0.022%, respectively. In a similar study, DSSCs that utilized single flame trees and Bougainvillea glabra flowers achieved PCEs of 0.17% and 0.21%, respectively.…”

“…16 Several dyes are used to improve the DSSC efficiency such as dyes extracted from spinach leaves, Luffa cylindrica-L dyes, dragon fruit, hibiscus and bitter leaf combination, Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) flowers and pawpaw (Carica papaya) sensitisers. [17][18][19][20] The use of extracted dyes from fruits, leaves and flowers is an important point in improving the DSSC efficiency. Therefore, in this work, we tried to improve the DSSC efficiency by using tamarillo, red dragon fruit, red spinach, boat lily flower and purple hibiscus flower as sensitisers.…”
