Aims and ObjectiveTo summarize evidence from systematic reviews (SRs)/meta‐analyses (MAs) regarding the impact of dyadic interventions delivered to both members of a cancer dyad, including a cancer patient and caregiver (e.g. family caregiver, intimate partner).DesignThis overview of SRs was conducted in accordance with the preferred reporting items for overviews of reviews statement.MethodsA comprehensive search of multiple databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wan Fang. The methodological and reporting quality of SRs and MAs was assessed using the Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews 2. The quality of the included SRs/MAs was evaluated using the Grades of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach.ResultsEighteen SRs/MAs undertook quantitative synthesis to assess the impact of dyadic interventions on cancer dyads. Both the credibility of the SRs/MAs and the evidence quality of the outcome measures were below satisfactory standards. Prior SRs/MAs revealed several limitations such as lack of pre‐published protocols or research objectives, failure to report excluded studies and insufficient details on funding sources for individual studies.ConclusionsDyadic interventions may prove advantageous for the physical health and dyadic adjustment of cancer dyads. Nevertheless, the reported results of dyadic interventions on the psychological health of patient–caregiver dyads affected by cancer are inconsistent. Thus, rigorous and comprehensive studies are requisite to establish reliable evidence for conclusive determinations.Relevance to Clinical PracticeThe findings of this overview can guide healthcare practitioners when considering the use of dyadic interventions for cancer dyads. Moreover, these findings have the potential to enhance the integration of these approaches into clinical practice.Patient or Public ContributionOur paper presents an overview of systematic reviews, and therefore, such specific details may not be relevant to our study.

Purpose The diagnosis of a primary brain tumor (PBT) causes significant distress for the caregiver-patient dyad, warranting increased supportive care intervention. Although researchers have previously assessed caregivers’ perceptions of their own supportive care needs, no study to date has identified how patients perceive the caregiving experience and/or patients’ recommendations for integrating supportive care of caregivers in neuro-oncology. This qualitative study examined caregiver distress as well as caregiver supportive care needs from the patients’ perspective to inform future intervention development. Methods Adults with PBT (N = 15; Mage = 45; 53% female; 93% White) were divided into four, 90-min focus groups moderated by a clinical neuropsychologist. Patients responded to semi-structured interview questions regarding various supportive care needs throughout the course of disease. Each discussion was transcribed and coded using thematic content analysis and NVivo software. Inter-rater reliability was excellent (MKappa = 0.92, range = 0.85–0.93). Results Seven distinct codes related to PBT caregivers emerged and were classified into two broader themes: Caregiver Impact (47% of coded content) and Caregiver Support (53% of coded content). Caregiver Impact refers to patients’ perspective of the practical and emotional demands of caregiving. Under Caregiver Support, patients cited a strong need for increased support of caregivers, including bereavement care, individual psychotherapy, and joint caregiver-patient dyad sessions. Conclusion Patients with PBT expressed profound concerns regarding the demands of caregiving and its impact on the well-being of their loved ones. Findings emphasize the need for comprehensive dyadic support in neuro-oncology throughout the disease trajectory to enhance the overall quality-of-life for both patients and their caregivers.

Zusammenfassung Einleitung Die Pflege eines Angehörigen ist mit psychischen Erkrankungen und verminderter Lebensqualität der Pflegenden assoziiert. Das Ziel dieser systematischen Übersichtsarbeit war es, die Ergebnisse methodisch guter Interventionsstudien zur Wirksamkeit nicht-pharmakologischer Interventionen auf patientenrelevante Endpunkte bei pflegenden Angehörigen in Deutschland zusammenzufassen. Methodik In drei großen wissenschaftlichen Literaturdatenbanken suchten wir nach Interventionsstudien mit Kontrollgruppe und einem niedrigen oder moderaten Biasrisiko zur Wirksamkeit von nicht-pharmakologischen Interventionen für pflegende Angehörige in Deutschland. Ergebnis Unter 4.376 überprüften Publikationen wurden 10 Interventionsstudien mit guter methodischer Qualität identifiziert. Diese untersuchten Mehrkomponenteninterventionen bzw. kognitive Verhaltenstherapie für pflegende Angehörige von Menschen mit Demenz (8 Studien), Schlaganfall (1 Studie) und mit allgemeiner Pflegebedürftigkeit (1 Studie). Die Kontrollgruppen erhielten Informationsmaterial als Minimalintervention oder übliche Standardversorgung. In Metaanalysen zeigte sich 3–6 Monate nach Studienbeginn eine statistisch signifikante leichte Reduktion depressiver Symptome durch eine kognitive Verhaltenstherapie (Standardisierte Mittelwertedifferenz - 0,27; 95%-Konfidenzintervall - 0,44 – - 0,10), die jedoch nach 9–12 Monaten keine statistische Signifikanz mehr erreichte (- 0,21; - 0,51–0,09). Mehrkomponenteninterventionen zeigten weder nach 3–6 noch nach 9–12 Monaten Veränderungen depressiver Symptome (- 0,18; - 0,40 – 0,03 bzw. − 0,14; - 0,47 – 0.14). Dagegen besserte sich die psychische Lebensqualität der pflegenden Angehörigen in den Mehrkomponenteninterventionsgruppen statistisch signifikant im Vergleich zu den Kontrollgruppen: nach 3–6 Monaten leicht (0,28; 0,01–0,56) und nach 9–12 Monaten moderat (0,45; 0,09–0,82). Auf die körperliche Lebensqualität hatten die Interventionen keinen Einfluss. Schlussfolgerung Die Reduktion depressiver Symptome durch verhaltenstherapeutische Interventionen für pflegende Angehörige scheint nur gering und nicht nachhaltig zu sein. Die psychische Lebensqualität der Betroffenen konnte durch Mehrkomponenteninterventionen längerfristig verbessert werden. Bisher wissenschaftlich untersuchte Interventionen für pflegende Angehörige scheinen keine ausreichende und nachhaltige Wirkung zu erzielen. Größere Effekte könnten möglicherweise durch aufwändigere verhaltenspräventive Interventionen aber auch verhältnispräventive Maßnahmen erzielt werden.
