DWI in Brains of Fetuses with Congenital Heart Disease: A Case-Control MR Imaging Study

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Abnormal ADC values are seen in ischemic brain lesions such as acute or chronic hypoxia. We aimed to assess whether ADC values in the developing brain measured by in utero DWI were different in fetuses with congenital heart disease compared with healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS:In utero DWI was performed in 50 fetuses with congenital heart disease and 100 healthy controls at a similar gestational age. Pair-wise ADC values of the ROIs were manually delineated on each side of the f… Show more

“…In contrast to earlier findings ( 20 , 30 ), no difference was detected in the mean ADCs of the FWM, TWM, PWM, OWM, CH, centrum semiovale, BGR, TH, and pons between the CHD and GA-matched controls. Although this finding is inconsistent with our hypothesis, it can be explained in several ways.…”

“…All ADC measurements were performed manually by the same pediatric neuroradiologist with 5 years of experience in fetal brain MRI. Previous studies have demonstrated good intra- and interobserver reproducibility of this technique ( 6 ). Importantly, the pediatric neuroradiologist was blinded to the fetal sex during ADC measurements to mitigate any potential bias.…”

“…Fetal age was determined based on the first day of the last normal menstrual period and confirmed by a first-trimester ultrasound scan. Previously, some findings of ADC analyses on this cohort were published to delineate normative data by gestational age (GA) ( 6 ). However, those analyses did not explore the potential influence of the fetal sex.…”
