The second generation digital video broadcasting system for terrestrial broadcasting (DVB-T2) was designed using a toolbox concept. Compared with its predecessor DVB-T, the new standard introduces many new algorithms and allows for a more flexible parameter configuration. The parameters can be perfectly optimized for each reception scenario, ranging from stationary reception with roof-top aerials, up to portable or mobile reception. However, all countries that have already introduced DVB-T2 mainly focus on stationary reception. In contrast, stationary reception is no relevant option for a potential introduction of DVB-T2 in Germany. Instead, a potential roll-out would focus on the benefits of terrestrial broadcasting compared to satellite and cable, i.e., mobility. Within an extensive field trial in northern Germany, the performance of the different parameter configurations and new algorithms offered by DVB-T2 were analyzed in detail, e.g., multiple physical layer pipes, rotated constellations, and multiple-input single-output. This paper presents the trial network and the obtained measurement results, which are based on thousands of individual measurements. Moreover, the document gives recommendations for an optimal parameter configuration.Index Terms-Digital video broadcasting system for terrestrial broadcasting (DVB-T2), mobile reception, portable reception, field trial, terrestrial broadcasting, Doppler frequency, Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) code packet error rate.

Abstract-This paper provides a review of the second generation of Terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting standard DVB-T2. DVB-T2 is the evolution of DVB-T and, together with DVB-S2 and DVB-C2, inaugurated a new transition from the first generation digital broadcasting systems, similar to the transition from analog to digital systems. In the paper the most relevant features of DVB-T2 are explained in detail, along with their benefits and trade-offs.The paper also presents a comprehensive review of the laboratory and field trial results available so far. Especial emphasis is placed in the results of the measurements carried out to test the mobile reception and the novel technologies as Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) and Time Frequency Slicing (TFS).

Abstract. In this study, an analytical formula for multipleinput single-output single frequency network gain (MISO-SFNG) is investigated. To formulate the net MISO-SFNG, we derived the average signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) where the gain achieved by the distributed MISO diversity as a function of power imbalance is curve-fitted. Further, we analyzed the losses owing to self-interferences resulting from the delay spread and imperfect channel estimation. We verified the accuracy and effectiveness of the derived formula by comparing the measurement results with the analytical results. The derived formula helps to understand how various system factors affect the gain under a given condition. The formula can be used to evaluate the MISO-SFNG and to predict the MISO-SFN coverage in various system configurations.
