“…Besides the previously highlighted correlation to coastal dune evolution, the approach can be a valuable tool in (i) forecasting vulnerable alongshore dune sections (shallow dune ridges, gaps); (ii) identifying dune sections with a need for reinforcement [e.g. additional sand nourishment (Brand et al, 2022), sand fencing (Eichmanns et al, 2021), hybrid dune core strengthening (Nordstrom, 2019)] and (iii) tracking post-storm related vulnerable sections.…”

“…We suggest that project planners and stakeholders carefully evaluate the specific objectives, constraints, and environmental conditions of their particular site before selecting a beach nourishment method. Factors to consider may include the desired beach morphology, the availability of sediment sources, the cost-effectiveness of each method, and the long-term sustainability of the chosen approach (Brand et al, 2022). In the future, a combination of sand replenishment in different areas can be considered to bring out the best effect of sand replenishment and conservation and to improve the efficiency of beach nourishment.…”

“…Under these circumstances, sedimentation is an important mechanism to mitigate the shrinking of tidal flat and to restore the ecological function of tidal flat. Some practical approaches have been designed for utilizing sedimentation to prevent the erosion of tidal flats, which include soft solutions such as sand nourishments (Cooke et al, 2012;Van der Werf et al, 2015;Brand et al, 2022) and traditional hard solutions such as dikes, groins and seawalls (Kuang et al, 2019). Recently, some innovative underwater nourishments, which are located at the subtidal regions, such as the channel wall nourishment, the shoreface nourishment and the Mud Motor, have been proposed as a more simplified and economical process of nourishing, but the effect of nourishments on the local morphodynamics is still not well understood (Baptist et al, 2019;Huisman et al, 2019;Brand et al, 2022).…”
